Questions
01What is a download server?
A virtual server with a large disk and suitable traffic, where you keep your files and deliver them to others by direct link.
02How much space do I get?
Each plan's disk size is in the plan list, and the recommended plans on this page carry at least one hundred gigabytes.
03What about traffic?
Each plan has its own allowance. For heavy downloads look at high-traffic plans or buy an extra traffic package.
04What software can I install?
Nginx, Apache, FTP or SFTP; you have root and can install anything.
05What files is it for?
Company software and packages, tutorials, your own content and backups. Do not publish other people's copyrighted content without permission.
More solutions
What is a download server?
A download server is a virtual server with a large disk and a fast network that keeps your files and delivers them to anyone you give a direct link. Instead of putting large files on a shared cloud drive and meeting speed and size limits, you have your own server: you set its speed, the links carry your name, and the only limit is the plan you chose.
It suits teams, companies, software makers and content creators; anyone who needs to hand files to customers, colleagues or their own audience.
What files is it for?
These are the common, legitimate uses of a download server.
Software and packages
If you build software, distribute installers, updates and packages from your own server. The link is stable, the speed steady and the download statistics are yours.
Tutorials and your own content
Put training videos, e-books and project files where students and customers can download them directly.
Archive and backup
A big disk means room for server backups, databases and old project archives.
Mirrors
For open-source projects or public datasets you can build a mirror so users download from the nearest source.
What specifications to look for
Three things matter on a download server: disk, traffic and network speed. The recommended plans on this page carry at least one hundred gigabytes of disk and are ordered by price, so the cheapest options come first. If your files are bigger, pick a plan with more disk.
For traffic, multiply the number of downloads by the file size. A thousand downloads of a one-gigabyte file need about a thousand gigabytes. If you want a lot of traffic, see high-traffic servers. CPU and RAM matter less; a small plan with a big disk beats an expensive plan with a small one.
Set up in minutes
Build a Linux server, connect over SSH and install Nginx. Define the files folder as a shared path and you have a direct link. If you want files protected or temporary, Nginx can do it with signed links or a simple password. For uploads, SFTP and rsync are the safest and simplest. For a larger team you can install a web file manager.
Because root is yours, any other tool you need can be installed. See the plans and start small.
Speed and stability
For stability, keep popular files in Nginx's cache and use a front server or several servers for heavier loads. Follow traffic usage from the Telegram bot.
Better downloads
Always serve large files with resume support so a dropped connection does not restart the download from zero; Nginx does this by default. Turn on compression and caching for popular files. Keep file names and versions tidy and put a checksum beside each file so users can confirm it arrived intact.
If your audience is spread over several regions, build two servers in two locations and sync the files between them so each user downloads from the nearest one. Because servers are hourly, replication is cheap.
Security, copyright and cost
The server is yours, and so is responsibility for what is on it. Publish only files you have the right to publish, and never distribute other people's copyrighted content without permission. Open only the ports you need, log in with SSH keys and keep backups somewhere other than this server.
To build and test a download service, the developer server is a good choice. If the same server hosts a game, see the gaming server. For a simple start, try CloudSnap cloud servers.
